I honestly can say that I only listen to music that I can relate to, I pay no attention to what mainstream media has out there but i must admit that the majority of people in society are heavily influenced and persuaded to like certain artistes/genres.
Yes I strongly believe that the media influences what people listen to because the media are the ones that basically choose what should be played.....eg on radio the Dj's are the ones who choose wat to play n i guess they choose what they think are hot

Yellow journalism or the yellow press is a type of journalism that presents little or no legitimate well-researched news and instead uses eye-catching headlines to sell more newspapers. Yellow journalism, in short, is biased opinion masquerading as objective fact. Techniques may include exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, or sensationalism. By extension "Yellow Journalism" is used today as a pejorative to decry any journalism that treats news in an unprofessional or unethical fashion. It all started, some historians believe, with the onset of the rapid industrialization that was happening all around the world. The Industrial Revolution eventually affected the newspaper industry, allowing newspapers access to machines that could easily print thousands of papers in a single night. This is believed to have brought into play one of the most important characteristics of yellow journalism - the endless drive for circulation. And unfortunately, the publisher's greed was very often put before ethics.

I think that yes the media has a role to play in what we listen too especially depending on the time of that year. Music is an experience.
