Blue Whale Bus in my head like Gun

No, this isn't a line straight out of a 1990 Rambo Film, or something uttered just under the breath of a Sci Fi Thriller. That was what we heard playing from a passing car which so conveniently slowed down outside our corner house.. The lyrics I heard were: "grab up ur crotches, sidong on the body, what u say; "U love sausage?" white girl c it and say "what that is?" "

Do the Gully God and the Gaza General have more say than Kamla and our Laws or the Pastor and his Bible? Isn't it remarkable that you actually know who I am referring to by saying "Gully God and Gaza General". Is mainstream media filtering to the masses what it should or are they subject to the whims and fancies of the cultural or genre trend setters? Are local trends just as eye opening?

Which thousand words does this image convey? Considering the dictionary definition of "thug" is an aggressive and violent young criminal. And also considering the fact that this individual is singing to us as we speak (turn on the radio and see for yourself) TELL US: Which thousand words does this image convey?

What ever it is, as far as I am concerned. I do not know what a blue whale is, nor how it could possibly "bus in my head like gun". But somehow the media has in bedded in my head that this phrase is catchy and must be listened to. Maybe I may be nieve and in religious denial that had their existed no media I may have fallen in love with that said tune. Whatever it is, I personally believe the masses, more particularly the female masses should not be encouraged to "cock up your foot like clothes on the line".

Social Media for World Aids Day

From inside the house we could tell it was world AIDS day. Never before has their been so many updates and posts about getting tested. Looking out the window the sidewalk now in the shadow of that mobile health clinic and the line stretches around the corner. Ken just wanted to see what's going on, but the line blocked him. Where is marypoppings when you need her to clear the corner?

The caption of this video is : "Watch our new video explaining why universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care is the key to ending the global AIDS epidemic. Includes single by Sdia." What is remarkable is that a key point in "access" is awareness. Especially in Trinidad and Tobago, many free HIV and AIDS drugs exist but I am sure you, the reader is unsure where to access these.

Social Media is actually key in the campaign of (RED). (RED) is not a nay fly by night partnership charity company. According to Wikipedia: "Product Red, styled as (PRODUCT)RED, is a brand licensed to partner companies such as Nike, American Express (UK), Apple Inc., Starbucks, Converse, Bugaboo, Penguin Classics (UK & International), Gap, Emporio Armani, Hallmark (US) and Dell. It was founded in 2006 by U2 frontman and activist Bono and Bobby Shriver of ONE/DATA to engage the private sector in raising awareness and funds to help eliminate AIDS in Africa"

This is one opportunity we can applaud the media, and this is an excellent example of the power of the comman man, the power of blogs such as these and the power of social media in general. The facebook fan page spareheading the slogan: "Aids Free Generation due in 2015" has reached over 600,000 world wide. And 44 of my friends from right here in Trinidad.

I turned the world Red today. I am using Media as my catalyst to change the world, what are you doing with your day?

Happy Birthday Kaelanne Jordan!

And everyone in our house claps and sings the Happy Birthday jingle. Marie Hull brings that price smart cake from the fridge. And Akiela and Thalia dig in head first... Somewhere in a corner, Ken ignores his consistently avaricious appetite. He gazes out the window, his vision transfixed beyond this Corner House Birthday  Party. What does he see?

According to the 1998 Guinness Book of World Records, "Happy Birthday to You" is the most recognized song in the English language, As such Birthday Celebrations have served as the prime opportunity for the climax of a year of work, or a chance to smile when nothing else gives one reason to, or a reason to appreciate another year of life or just a reason for the self centered to feel more self centered. Whatever it means, where did Birthday Celebrations come from? Ask yourself, is it biblical? Is it cultural? Is it national? Just what type of celebration is a Birthday Celebration?

So I did a google search, some basic research and came up which some eye opening results. The website: "http://www.truthontheweb.org/bdays.htm" offers a biblical view point, pointing out that the bible may beg to differ as all its references to birthdays involve deaths. It also points out that the customs may have had pagan (non Christian origins). Wikipedia says under "Birthday" that The early Christians did not celebrate Christ's birth because they considered the celebration of anyone's birth to be a pagan custom.

So wait, if Birthdays were so terrible back in the day, and involved murder and festivals to Gods made of stone why do we celebrate it today? Has the media brainwashed us again? It seems to me that much of this is a product of commercialism. What better sales push than to create a reason for Celebration and rampant spending potentially all year round. Or Maybe I am just looking to hard out the window an dover analyzing everything... Maybe I should just go eat the cake and say thanks to Marie for buying it...

See Video above! Is there anything wrong with the this? Isn't that just clean fun!

The facts do dictate that somehow Birthday Celebrations as a routine dropped from the sky, do you think it possible that the Mass Media has blinded us to the facts about Birthdays?
(I didn't ask if you think Birthdays are wrong or right! I asked you think it possible that we have been blinded to the facts -- keyword -- possible)

Is Social Media a Fad?

Ken walks from the living room into the study... taps his foot to the rhythms of Kid Cudi's Maniac and it strikes a chord in his head. He decides to write a poem and post it to facebook and tag his friends. Before he could even begin tagging, several people comment and praise his piece. Flattered, he shakes his head and rehashes to a friend that this all began with one poem on hi5 he wrote for some girl he missed... and he had no idea that his words flowed so smoothly in and out until everyone commented and told him so.

This video always hits the spot with me. Its like what some of us have been saying for the longest while.
Like Kanye West said in his song "Power". We all don't have to be the next american Idol anymore...
All we have to do is get a camera and "shoot a viral". Viral videos have taken center stage and the unique thing about them is that you probably simply need $1usd to walk into an internet cafe and use a computer with a webcam. This webcam can be used to record your speech and actions and with another 10 mins to create an email address and youtube account a caveman following instructions can have a "viral video" online. This is actually so easy, even a caveman can do it. And it is not car insurance, but its the assurance that the power openly available to all willing to harness it can have a resounding effect on almost anyone anywhere. It is my opinion that this is what makes our modern society truly free. No longer can the media moguls with the huge cameras and expensive equipment fool us into believing what ever they choose. Some one was there, and it is probably on youtube already. Google it and verify!

Now singers, song writers, men and women of talent have no excuse, no reason even to complain about lack of opportunity. Justin Bieber and Soulja Boy were both discovered on social media sites. Justin youtube and Soulja myspace. Amazing that the projected net worth of these two singers in the next 5 years should they continue their current income is just about equal to the monthly budget of Trinidad and Tobago's government.

Enjoy the Video Below. - It says what I can't say in so many words! Social Media runs the world.

Is it a Trick or a Treat?

As we approach the end of October, we are bombarded by scary decorations, outrageous costumes and invitations to the spookiest of parties, why? It's Halloween! This festival was primarily celebrated by the US along with other northern countries, but how did the celebration start in Trinidad?

I am aware that residents of the West for instance celebrated it since the early 70's because those areas are full of residents who migrated from northern continents but now the festival is National! With every store commercializing the festival.

From the bumble-bee costume to the french maid, skulls to doctors and with every popular club in the land hosting a costume gala with prizes for the best, is Halloween becoming part of the Trinbago Culture? If so Why isn't it mentioned in the national Calender?

Does the nation understand the significance of the Halloween celebration in terms of Religion and Superstition? Or has the Media just infiltrated the celebration in our minds as something "cool" and the opportunity to play Dress up and Disguise?

Fooled into Security?

Preamble: Early Monday morning, I heard a woman scream. Looking out the window (because we all know I am not going any closer) and down the road I noticed a body lying face down on the ground. The commotion caught the attention of our entire village, except the village police. Later that night, in our living room the corner house family sat and were shocked when reporters said "speedy police response" referring to the shooting incident in our neighborhood.

Allegations of corruption, police brutality, unsolved murders and the lack of and skewed responsiveness of the police to crimes are nothing new said by citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.
It is a fact that people have very little or no faith in the police service. Especially since crime in T&T is very high. Out off 548 crimes in T&T in 2008 only 20 were solved. There is even a Face book page titled Trinidad police is the worst.
Some police are just as bad as criminals

I once called the police to make a report of a man that just raped a woman and was still prowling the area like God and they never came. Now we have a new administration, a new year, new crimes, yet still little has changed. The biggest change from my perspective, has little to do with the actual solving of crimes or execution of police work. The most noteworthy and conspicuous recent 'improvement' has been heavy advertisements by the police service.
Recently, there have been many advertisements on the various forms of media depicting the efforts of the police service to stop or curb the crime situation in the country. Advertising is very effective and has the power to create awareness, inform, and persuade. It can make us buy things we don’t want and sing songs we don’t like. So this is my question.

Do you think that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is using the media to 'dupe' citizens into thinking they are effectively handling the crime situation in Trinidad and Tobago and actually doing their job?
